ALEXANDER RUSNAK   WALK AROUND THE UNHOLY APARTMENT

The mysteries behind Bulgakovís Master and Margarita still enchant Russians and expats alike. The Russian mystery novel of a century, it is famous for its locations, seemingly simple but in effect hard-to-find.

Most of them directly connect us to moments in Bulgakovís biography. It seems an elaborate way to cope with the necessity to change places and forget the feeling of home, by making all the locations in the row of changing places, places of the enchanting novel, rearrange them in a new artistically meaningful way.
Not the music, not the TV, nor topographers... They will all come later at the designed time. The city legend of my generation starts from getting back, getting back home to where it all started, where for the first seven years of my life I lived in the absolute world, as if constructed out of childrenís toys, where you learn to design your dreams. Later, it is the school and unwanted books of the era, that turn the usual buildings and streets of Moscow into the space of legends.
Master and Margarita was published in the end of the 1960ís, and these were years of birth of a generation of youth that would later find their home addressed in the famous novel, tying the knots of the legendary route of Bulgakov in the 70ís and 80ís. Parents and old inhabitants explained some things, some things the boys invented themselves, but this was the birth of the last ultimate urban legend of Moscow.
